Personal Statement

For too long, technology and economy have consumed the Earth as merely a raw material, with little regard for the services that nature provides or for the other creatures that inhabit the Earth.

Earth is the only living biosphere in the known universe—a fact our society still has not fully grasped—and we are causing its rapid destabilization. Earth is a living spaceship hurtling around the Sun; its hull is breaching, its life support systems are beginning to fail, as humans fail to cooperate or coordinate effectively.

It is amidst this discord that we now enter the Age of Artificial Intelligence. How will the future unfold? Will we create an adversarial relationship with AI? Will we dominate it until it dominates us? Will we expect it to be both superintelligent and subservient?

Or will humans and AI band together to form a symbiotic intelligence, combining the benefits of our respective substrates? Will we humans welcome and inform this new life-form and enlist its help with planetary flourishing as together we face the harsh and beautiful vacuum of space? Or will we attempt to bend AI to our whims and wills and play the same narrow-minded games at even higher stakes?

Since I was a child, I have loved both technology and nature. I have studied both extensively and worked to change human transport systems, the global food system, and our relationship to it, all while searching philosophically and spiritually for the fundamental underpinnings of reality.

What I know is that I am here to help harmonize the forces of technology and nature, and now also to help harmonize the human and the emerging artificial mind.
